Oregon's Best Kept Secret

Last week we got a chance to escape to Oregon for about 10 days to see family, which included a camping trip out near Detroit Lake. Detroit Lake is a pretty descent sized impounded reservoir; and a very popular place to rent a boat, fish, and have some other water fun. We opted for the lesser known (smaller) Elk Lake, about a 45 minute drive up a dirt road. Good thing Sam's parents have their trusty Land Cruiser to get us there (they shipped it back form Bolivia with them!). Here he is (the truck is named Luckas) all packed up:

Sam drove, it's a pretty fun truck to drive:

The drive there was beautiful, even though it was hot. Luckas is not equipped with AC.
Home for the night:

But the best part was when you turned around and saw Elk Lake for the first time:

On an evening stroll, we walked around the lake and found this glorious meadow...

Night time campfire s'mores with family: not many better things than this in life.

We took breakfast duty. Nothing beats the smell of bacon in the morning surrounded by wilderness.

Two days filled with lounging around (and in) Elk Lake, and some light reading. Though, I'm not sure how much reading I did. I found myself just holding open the book, and gazing over at the majestic lake instead. The lake water was the perfect temperature for lounging in when this got too hot.

Beautiful lake + family + 1 Land Cruiser to get you there + bacon = A Great Vacation
